Fitting things in before I'm in movie mode...

October begins 31 Days of Des' Horror Favourites so there will be my review of a horror film every day in the mighty eighth month. Before I do so I must mention a few things. Tomorrow will be the beginning my October stunt so I'm sticking things in today.

My 31 favourite horror films will be counted down starting with #31 tomorrow (October 1st) until I get to #1 (you guessed it: October 31st). As usual, criticisms and comments are always welcome. If I'm out of my mind let me know.

Big Des News!!!!!!!

I'm auditioning to be a contestant on Jeopardy! And not a lame Canadian version of Jeopardy. Not even Rock & Roll Jeopardy. Real Jeopardy. This is November 8th. If things go well I will do a daily weblog of my experience and call it "What is Without Me You're Only You?"

Courtesy of WonK at Millarworld I have some info on the Korean movie Brian and I were stars in during our time in Amsterdam...okay...we were extras but here's the info anyway. The movie is called Daisy:

Jeon Ji-hyun (b. October 30, 1981) first became well-known as a commercial model and as a TV actress....Jeon's breakout film was comedy My Sassy Girl, which became a huge hit both in Korea and throughout Asia with its tale of a gullible college student and his slightly unhinged girlfriend. The film spent two weeks at #1 in Hong Kong, and turned her into Korea's most recognizable star in the Chinese-language market. ... 2004 saw her return to the big screen in another film by Kwak Jae-yong, the director of My Sassy Girl. Windstruck cast her in the role of a policewoman, but many viewers felt it was too similar to My
Sassy Girl. There were also signs that her popularity had started to suffer
because of overexposure in advertisements. Nonetheless, Windstruck became the
best-performing film ever in Japan, where My Sassy Girl was not as well known.

Jeon's next project Daisy teams her with Jung Woo-sung (who frequently appears together with her in advertisements), and has drawn attention for its 100% location shooting in the Netherlands, and for using the Hong Kong director Andrew Lau (Infernal Affairs). Kwak Jae-yong (My Sassy Girl) wrote the screenplay.

from koreanfilm.org

And even more from Asian Cinema Drifter.com

Top-star Jeon Ji-hyun has chosen the Hong Kong movie “Daisy,” directed by Andrew Lau, as her next production. She will play opposite Jeong
Woo-seong, who played the lead in the movie “A Moment to Remember.” “Daisy” will be directed by Andrew Lau, who also directed the “Internal Affairs” series, while the script will be overseen by director Kwak Jae-yong, who directed “Windstruck.”... “Daisy” is a story about the inevitable showdown between a detective and a killer who fall in love with the same woman. In the story, Jeon plays a street artist who dreams of opening her own exhibition someday, while
Jeong portrays a killer who loves her but cannot confess his love to her because of his profession. ... “Daisy” is the product of a collaboration of high-profile actors and production crews from Korea and China: Andrew Lau, who directed “A
Man Called Hero” and “Internal Affairs,” Kwak Jae-yong, who had a chance to work with Jeon Ji-hyun in “Windstruck” and “My Sassy Girl,” the production crew of “Internal Affairs,” the martial arts team of “Spiderman” and the simultaneous
recording team of “Taegeugki.” ... ”Daisy” will be filmed in the Netherlands and will open this December.

Infernal Affairs, by the way, was the shit!

Courtesy of Thighs Wide Shut I bring you the trailer for The Shining:Redux. It's the most I've laughed in a loooonnnggg time.

See you tomorrow!

Congrats!

Watched the Degree Poker Chamionship on TSN today and was delighted to find that Liam Greig was the winner. Liam and I went to the same high school and worked together at a restaurant for many years. Now, not only is he the best damn guitar player I know, he also is $105,000 richer.

Not only is he very rich but he gets to compete in the World Poker Championship in the States...not bad for a guy who hadn't played poker 10 months ago.

Hey Liam, remember that time I leant you $105,000? That was nice of me huh?

Back to reality:

A teacher at the high school Meg and I went to has been arrested on child pornography charges. I have yet to discover who it is, and if I know him, but I have my sneaking suspicions.

Some stuff people have found my blog by searhcing for over the past few weeks:

-holy pain in the ass batman- The way Miller has Bats acting lately I see Robin saying this soon.
-A mural on "A Modest Proposal"-a mural on people eating babies...is this a Clive Barker story?
-how to grow hair on your chest-you have come to the right place, my son.
-old man fucking young man-Ewww...
-werewolf balls-a new addition to my unused band name list no doubt!
-werewolf facial hair-yep...right place.
-"perverted things"-who actually searches for perverted things on the internet? I just did and this is the first listing google offers. Very odd, another blogger looking at search engine stuff...
-free pictures of men without shirts on-yep...right place. I mean wrong! Wrong place!
-Vicki Vale underwear Batman-Frank Miller and Jim Lee are playing to a certain audience...I take back everythign I've said.
-"Have you ever made a planet, or nation, radioactive?"-this is my personal favourite.

And lots more for Unused Band Names so without further ado...

DON'T call me Octopussy!

Courtesy of The Engine, I found a linked site which contains the first picture ever of a live giant squid!

There is some argument that it is not in its natural habitat as 900m deep would be darker than that (even with a flash!). So, watch out! The Squid are coming!

But, never fear, we have our own invertebrate undersea dweller to protect us: the most badass octopus ever! (Video, with loud volume)

That's right...look out.

Revenge killer
You kill for revenge.
That is because you have lost something or
someone you held very dear. Now you can't seem
to get over the loss that marked your soul, and
the only solution is to go after the one person
who brought all this pain to you. Chances are
you are angry inside and you bottle everything
up and don't talk to anyone about it. People
may want to help, but you think that they can
never understand your pain and only get
frustrated because of this. But it is important
to see all that you have left and be thankful
of that even if you have lost something great.
It may not be true that Times heals all wounds,
but with time and talking about your feelings,
maybe the hurt will ease.

More Television and Unused Band Names...

Lost
I watched the season premiere of Lost tonight and was totally impressed. I love the concurrent past and present storyline thing they do in some episodes. I don't like Jack. NOT because of his character but because he's being played by the big brother from Party of Five! He is that character. Think about it: stressful circumstances (ie: parents dying in a car crash/being lost on a tropical island) and dealing with adversity through the guidance of a tortured leader. Hmm...I may be on to something here.

Kiki, if you know Evangeline Lilly then your cool factor just jumped a few notched to "uber-cool". That's good, it's got an umlaut! But here's a little nugget of trivia if you didn't know. The Jack guy who may hook up with Evangeline on this show, hooked up with that mentally unstable blond waif on Party of Five right? Well, you know Evangeline and mentally unstable blond Waif girl (how's that for a superhero name?) went to your high school! It's okay...lift your jaw. I blow minds for a living.

Invasion
If you're getting an understanding of headings then you'll realize I also watched the season premiere of Invasion tonight. It was su-weet. It's exactly the relevant show that Western culture needs right now. The motif of danger posed by the outsider from within (a la Invasion
of the Body Snatchers, clearly the influence on this show) is very resonant in America's psyche since September 11th 2001. But! Deliver it wrapped in a devastating hurricane in the Southern United States and you, sir, have your relevance.

PS The fat guy from Breaker High is awesome!

Quick thoughts on television before bedtime:

-I loooooovveee House. Dammit!

-I had a lackluster showing on today's Jeopardy. Don't laugh, it's research. I applied for an interview to be a contestant. But I did learn what an antipope is...where do I sign up?

-My Name is Earl with Jason Lee is so funny I almost had milk come out of my nose but, alas, I haven't had any milk today.

-The American version of The Office is funnier than I expected and I think Steve Carell might be better as the manager than Ricky Gervais is.

-Every time I see that commercial for Martha Stewart's apprentice when she says "You don't want to see me lose my patience" I get a flash of her tipping the table over and pulling a shiv while screaming about making them her bitches and selling them for cigarettes in that deep voice of hers. That would keep those ladies in line!

Comics New and Old...

Ahh...the big day.

Outsiders #28-I am totally digging Daniel Acuna's covers for this series. Very Adam Hughes-ish. Story-wise it's good to see that things are winding down a bit after the crossover with Teen Titans. This book seems to be at its best when there is no major enemy attacking and things are left to characterization.

Interesting tidbit with Nightwing and Starfire pavng the way for their foretold future in the Titans of Tomorrow storyline a few months back.

Highlight of the issue was Shift and Metamorpho getting drunk together:

M: Okay...let's you and me get drunk.
S: Alcohol doesn't affect my physiology. I can't get drunk.
M: Why don't we try really hard...
Excellent.
Fell #1-Warren Ellis, Ben Templesmith, 16 pages, $2.40, no ads, stand alone stories every month. I'm so in. This issue was great. It tells the story of Detective Richard Fell helping out the police in Snowtown. Only, the entire city seems to have an odd, depraved cloud hanging over it. It's wicked awesome non-superhero Ellis stuff. BUY THIS BOOK. BUY THIS BOOK. BUY THIS BOOK. Why? Because if it gets cancelled I'm coming to your house and cutting you. That's why!
Extra pages at the back are left for filler material. This one has an intro by Ellis but look for character sketches and extra info in future months.
Desolation Jones #3-Remember wayyy back (2 paragraphs ago...) when I said "wicked awesome non-superhero Ellis stuff"? Yeah, well ditto this one.
Jones' quest for Hitler's homemade porno movies with Eva Braun continues in Los Angeles when he meets up with a porn star.
Do you think this is for mature audiences or what?
Rann-Thanagar War #5-This soooo could have been done in three issues. God! It's tiring me out how much Gibbons is stretching this out. I don't even like Hawkman or Adam Strange.
I like Reis and Prado but why isn't Gibbons drawing this?
All-Star Batman and Robin the Boy Wonder #2-I'm not sure whether to laugh with this book or...well...laugh at it. What is Miller doing? Batman calling Robin retarded? What the fuck is that?
At least he has Jim Lee on a 16 panel grid on one page of this issue. That's something that no one's ever seen.
House of M #6-Okay...I'm beginning to like this. Coipel is the shit! I think Bendis knows what he's doing. Although in the catch-up page for this book it says that Wolverine encounters a "long dead" Hawkeye? "Long dead"? It's been like 7 months! Christ! Superman was dead longer than that!
Villains United #5-One of the best books DC is publishing right now. Great action, great characterization, Eaglesham's art is fantastic and I actually care about Catman!
The big reveal of who Mockingbird is is next month. My bet is on Lex Luthor.
JLA #118-Me likey Despero. My fave JLA issue ever is when there is that dream sequence he has where he destroys the JLA and then the earth while the JLA watch on a TV screen. That is good comics! Despero is one bad mother and all sorts of crazy shit is going down next month that I'm drooling over.
JSA #77-Man Alex Ross can paint him some superheroes! Another Day of Vengeance Tie-in but this time it's more of an Infinite Crisis prelude.
Sentinel, Hal Jordan and Airwave meet Donna Troy. There is the hint of all sorts of awful shit to come in IC. Sentinel proves how cool he is when he gives Hal Jordan fatherly advice. All the stuff you buy JSA for!
Ocean miniseries-Remember all that stuff I said about Ellis' non-superhero book? Yeah, I know it was a while ago but try and remember. Got it? Okay...it doesn't apply here. What a lame direction for this mini to take. Come on Warren! What a waste of a good story idea! Millions of cryogenically frozen billion year old predecessors of humans floating around under the Ice of Jupiter and you have them wake up only they don't even get out of the coffins?
Ugh...

I would have broken my shins...

I'm back from civilization!

I saw System of a Down and The Mars Volta perform last night at the coliseum. The Mars Volta opened the show and those of you familiar with the blog will know I saw them a few months ago at their own show in Glasgow. They were better then. They played for 2 hours and did 5 songs. This time they played for 1 hour and did four songs. Do the math. I found it to be a little wandering and boring after already seeing them.

They still looked like they were having fun and it must be cool to play the same song night after night but never play it the same way.

SOAD came on and rocked! God did they rock? Yes, my son, they rocked!

They played every song but 2 on the new album, every song but 3 (I think) on the Toxicity album, a bunch of songs (but not enough) from their first album and my favourite song from Steal This Album (Mr. Jack, if you were wondering).

Lots of energy and some playing with the format of some songs made for an interesting show musically. Bassist Shavo Oladjian made the show interesting visually. The man's an animal. Lots of crazy dancing, black shorts with yellow leotards underneath, and shining the lights off of the reflective bass guitar into the faces of audience members was in his repertoire.

Guitarist Daron Malkian littered the breaks between songs with acoustic intros to upcoming songs as well as a short cover of Neil Young's "Hey, Hey, My, My" which certainly won my approval. His rendition, later to be joined by the rest of the band, of "Sultans of Swing" by Dire Straits was amazing even though they replaced "Sultans of Swing" with "System of a Down." He's a baseball fan so that makes sense.

It's good to know that Serj, despite being Armenian in descent, still manages to dance like a white guy. His voice kicked ass and anyone should be lauded for being able to sing "Chop Suey" flawlessly.

Possibly the most entertaining thing of the whole show was watching the gate-jumpers. We were in the front row of the red section (where the bleachers meet the floor) and was separated from the floor by a 3 1/2 foot wall and an equally as high steel gate eight feet away from that. Many crazy kids tried to rush the floor but the security team was not having it. They caught about 1/3 of them but the ones they caught were given no mercy. A few guys even jumped from the wall to the gate and made it! I'd have broken my shins or something even more painful.

Watched CTV's catch-up thing on last season's Lost and I feel compelled to say that this season I am Lost's bitch. That's right! You heard me. I'm going to watch Invasion as well in a bid to support the fat guy from Breaker High (Ryan Gosling shouldn't get all the kudos!) and make Megan hate Wednesday nights.

Is Ryan Gosling really going to play Che Guevara?

bought comics too...back tomorrow with my thoughts on them.

already getting started for Halloween blogging. That's right: October is Des' favourite Horror Movie month and each day is counting down my 31 favourite horror films until the Big Day!!! Halloween shenanigans and memories of childhood Halloweens past will also include some posts. I've now listed my 31 favourites, I now have to order them and write each one up in a formulaic manner. I must start immediately if I am to keep up with the daily blogging thing.

That is all.

A weekend of stuff...

Boy did that season of Justice League Unlimited kick all kinds of ass!

I'm a little puzzled as to the angle they'll take this season as they wrapped up all the loose ends this season offered in the second to last episode and went like 50 years into the future to finish it off in more of an episode of Batman Beyond than JLU. I enjoyed it but is Batman the main character in JLU?

Meg and I are heading to the mainland for the weekend.

We leave tonight. We return Sunday when I will have comics and the System of a Down/Mars Volta concert to blab about.

As you were.

Went down to the river for a walk this evening and the salmon were literally jumping out of the water! They were huge. Tempted to take a bottle of vodka and a fishing pole down there in the cover of night but, alas, I am without a fishing pole.

Dav mentioned that he'd be interested in hearing my opinion on old comics as that's what I'm catching up on. Here goes...only in Haiku format (inspired by Absorbascon)!

"I Can't believe it's not the Justice League" from JLA Classified by Giffen, Maguire and DeMatteis...

Same old jokes again

Totally cliched.

How about them apples?

PS: I don't usually grab stuff from other blogs and post them unless I can add something to them but I thought I'd give more people the chance to understand what a collossal drunken asshole John Wayne is. WARNING: It's an mp3 so it requires volume and maybe works not the best place for it.

I'm Back, Baby!

Finally! We have a connection. After what seemed like forever in a technological void I am now connected with broadband!

Thought I'd throw some ideas for future posts out here so that I don't forget them:

-next in the series of "My life with..." posts will be the Simpsons. Then comes Mike Patton and Johnny Cash soon after that. If you don't know what I'm talking about check out the first installment on Clive Barker here.

-Stuff on old comics I'm catching up on due to Dav's request.

-Updates on the novel. That's right...I've started writing my novel. I never found the plot I was looking for but I went ahead and fleshed some characters out anyway. These scenes may find their way into the middle of the novel or they might not. Not sure. Once I'm somewhat happy with the first chapter I may post it for some critiques.

Courtesy of Tom at Superfrankenstein I got this link to a video of a guy telling Dick Cheney to "go fuck himself." Note: the rich white guys chuckling after Mr. Vice President amusingly excuses a man who has probably lost everything he owns/many people he knows.

This is as political as I get today.

Ooops...That was a lie. Went to the Fall Fair here in Port Alberni this weekend and ate lunch beside Stephen Harper (no I'm not linking to the Conservatives website). As my wife (who reminds me why I love her so) remarked: "He has food on his face."

I almost lost my appetite...but it was a bean and beef burrito. How could I resist?

I'm going away now to try and rid my computer of its multitude of Spyware. Adieu.

I'm back for one day only!

Hello! Hello! Hello! (those last 2 were echoes).

It's been a while since the last post and I still don't have email until Monday! Damn...thought I'd update you folks anyways:

-The place looks great barring the entire room that is cordoned off for boxes of a bunch of stuff yet to be unpacked.
-Meg is almost done her first week teaching and is coping fine.
-I am still jobless and have no status as a teacher in BC yet. Yet (crosses fingers).
-I have lots of work to do setting stuff up and unpacking things so i'm keeping busy.
-I have been delightfully listening to my much missed CDs and reading my much missed comics. I'm reading Planet Simpson (can't link on this stupid iMac) of which I will go into in more detail after receiving the 'net.
-Saw my first bear today by the river when I drove Meg to school/work this morning: awesome.
-Finally, I have decided to use the days to myself to write my novel (at least get started on it) but the plot for the first 100 pages i wrote in Scotland appears to be the only thing I have misplaced in this move. Cruel fate. Why dost thou mock me? I'm diving into said packed room to open boxes and find those all important pieces of lined paper. Wish me luck.

I'm beginning to detect a pattern here...

Flippant comments before radio silence....

Yeah yeah yeah...I said I'd be gone but we really don't leave til tomorrow.

Filled up a 24 foot U-Haul today at the storage facility and it's going to be driven to Port Alberni (along with 4 other cars) tomorrow morning. It's going to be a convoy!!!

The U-Haul had to be filled up with gas (at 1.079 per litre no less) and I stopped when the meter read $103.16. This means there is probably a 240 litre gas tank in that mother!

Truck talk...I never thought I'd see the day.

Yes Dav, I well talk about some old stuff when I've got the net again (in about 2 weeks).

Kiki, here's hoping our move goes as well as yours seems to be.

I also have a lead on a full time English High School teaching job beginning Tuesday!

Now I'm out of here. Adios.

Some things before I go...

Thought that I would first of all point you to another hilarious site courtesy of Big Ell. I pointed you towards a top 10 most ridiculous (at least I think I did; I can't find it in my archives...) a while ago and here is its hilarious sequel: (The Other) Top 10 Most Ridiculous Black Metal Pics of All Time

Do yourself a favour and check it out.

Fixed the trunk of the Lincoln today and it is now ready to be piloted. We'll wait until after the move.

In looking through my archives for said link I have realized how much this blog became anything but a comics blog. I used to talk about New Comics, upcoming solicitations, and covers. After the move look to see more stuff on solicitations and covers on a regular basis. I don't talk about new comics anymore because I'm playing catch-up on a year of books from when I was in Scotland. They're fun but I don't think it would be too interesting going on about the Daredevil: Golden Age storyline.

Here is some recent comic stuff:

Green Lantern #4-Hector Hammond may be my new favourite DC villain. Johns handles him beautifully and sets up the new GL Corps title in this issue. Sharp and vibrant colours with a great handles of the characters gives the art my thumbs up. And I've never been a Van Scriver fan!

Teen Titans #27-Haven't actually read it but Adam (my LCS owner/operator) pointed out that if you had a drinking game based on taking a shot every time you saw a Liefeld-drawn background then you'd be one sober dude.

Jeph Loeb and Joe Mad taking over Ultimates after Millar/Hitch leave? Good to know that Marvel picked the one artist who'll be less regualar on his art than Hitch. Guess I'll be saving myself a few bucks...

There! Am I still relevant?

Going to a staff appreciation night tonight for a place I no longer work. Those words sound so sweet.

Not too sure how much I'll be posting between now and September 12th. Meg and I are moving starting tomorrow and won't get a connection in our new place until the 12th. To top that off we won't have a phone until Telus employees decide that they don't want to stand around outside with a sign any longer. I think I am a bit of a Socialist in my support for the worker but every time somthing like this happens the fascist side of me comes out.

I will be in a communication blackout for a while in between checking my email on Nana's computer so I bid you adieu.
